Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, non-invasive therapeutic practice designed to effect the free flowing and filtration of the lymphatic system, allowing it to drain optimally, thereby detoxifying the body, enhancing the immune system. The technique, often known as “The Perfect Touch” is immensely effective - having a pain relieving and, ultimately, a quietening effect on the mind as well as the body. It is fully grounded in science, whilst being the ultimate holistic treatment we offer.
MLD can be deployed effectively as a general health and detoxifying procedure. It is particularly effective as a key element in the care and treatment of patients with the following presentations:
PRIMARY LYMPHOEDEMA
SECONDARY LYMPHOEDEMA
LIPOEDEMA
CHRONIC VENOUS INSUFFICIENCY
Phleboedema
CHRONIC SINUSITIS
PREGNANCY OEDEMA
POST COSMETIC SURGERY SWELLING & BRUISING
ARTHRITIS
CHRONIC HEADACHES & MIGRAINES
STRESS RELATED CONDITIONS
GUT DISORDERS e.g. IBS
FIBROMYALGIA
JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGERY
To deliver, in a safe, supportive and holistic environment, world class best practice in clinical healthcare. The Lymph & Sinus Clinic is, and shall continue to be , a recognized Centre of Excellence in all aspects of MLD – Manual Lyph Drainage – and CDT – Combined Decongestive Therapy.

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a specialized therapeutic massage technique designed to stimulate the lymphatic system and promote the flow of lymph fluid throughout the body. Developed in the 1930s by Emil and Estrid Vodder, MLD is widely used for managing lymphedema, reducing swelling, and enhancing the body’s immune response.
The lymphatic system is a network of vessels, nodes, and organs that helps maintain fluid balance, remove toxins, and support immune function. When the lymphatic system is compromised or overwhelmed, fluid may accumulate, leading to swelling (edema) or other health issues.
MLD uses gentle, rhythmic, and precise hand movements to:
1. Stimulate the lymphatic vessels to move stagnant lymph fluid toward functioning lymph nodes.
2. Reduce swelling by draining excess fluid from tissues.
3. Encourage the elimination of waste and toxins through the body’s natural filtration processes.
MLD techniques are characterized by light pressure, as the lymphatic vessels lie just beneath the skin. The key movements include:
These techniques are applied in a specific sequence, starting with areas closest to the main lymphatic ducts (such as the neck or abdomen) to “clear the way” for fluid from other parts of the body.
MLD has a wide range of benefits, including:
MLD is often used to treat:
While MLD is generally safe, it is contraindicated in certain conditions, such as:
MLD should only be performed by trained and certified practitioners, such as those who have undergone specialized training in the Vodder, Leduc, or Foldi methods. Certification ensures that the therapist understands the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system and can perform the technique safely and effectively.
Your chosen therapist should be listed on the MLD Ireland website www.mldireland.com
In conclusion, manual lymph drainage is a valuable therapy for managing a variety of health conditions, improving lymphatic function, and promoting overall well-being.
CDT, or Combined Decongestive Therapy, is the integrated mix of MLD, compression bandaging where necessary, measurement and procurement of compression garments in the maintenance phase, remedial movement / exercise guidance and therapeutic skin care. It may also cover breathwork and aquatic exercise and nutritional advice. Kathy is uniquely qualified to provide all of these services, and frequently brings clients onto the gym floor or into the pool for exercise therapy.
We are based in the West Wood Club, Westmanstown, Dublin, D15 T447, and see clients from the surrounding areas such as Blanchardstown, Lucan and Clonsilla.
Sessions last around 50 - 55 minutes (longer duration 90" slots can also be booked), and we advise you to book online. A consultation form is provided online, and we ask you to fill this with as much detail as possible, including any consultant referrals. Fees are €100 per hour or part thereof and can be claimed against health insurance.
No, this is the lightest touch as the initial lymph vessels are situated just beneath the epidermal layer of the skin. Instead of massage, think of MLD as directed skin movement.
You should be able to make a claim, depending on your level of cover, as long as you book with a certified MLD practitioner. A list of these verified therapists can be found on www.mldireland.com
Your MLD therapist will be happy to show you simple MLD strokes for you to do at home, plus advice on exercise, skin health, etc.
A range of beneficial effects for patients with conditions ranging from lyphoedema, chronic sinus issues through to general health and wellbeing and detoxification have been recorded and noted in scientific journals.
As MLD is an immensely calming treatment, you should feel lighter and freer from stress and stress-related anxiety. You may also feel sleepy (many nod off during treatment), and may be thirsty so hydration is key.
